A City Made By People

A City Made By People is an international network that celebrates citizens who make our cities more liveable; online, via local speaker events, and in print. They asked me to create a series of illustrations that lead the reader through their magazine. The illustrations mark their four pillars; Who We Meet, What We See, Why We Create, and How We Progress.

Who We Meet - It’s not just the planning commissioners and property developers who shape a city - palpable urban evolution involves everyone from street sweepers to shopkeepers. Or that cute guy next door. Nothing ties you to a place like the people who live there.

What We See - I love to see what goes on in hidden courtyards and behind closed doors. Spotting small treasures and hints of other people’s lives can be the highlight of my day. I have highlighted these details with a dab of colour, so you won’t miss them.

Why We Create - How bleak would our cities be without the power of creativity? Let’s solve problems, build bridges, express ourselves and share ideas with pride and sheer joy. Just like the people from this chapter who - through pursuing their dreams - contribute to a better city.

How We Progress - We can make our cities healthier by putting our heads - and our hands - together. Take a look at local urban improvements like Copenhagen's iconic bicycle bridge. This is my version of the Cykelslangen, or Cycle Snake, that connects the city and transports cyclists across the harbour.

Cost Of Living

Also, I made illustrations to accompany an article that compares the cost of living in different cities, measured by the average price of a taxi ride, rent for a 1 bedroom apartment, a latte, and a cinema visit. The illustrations are also available as a set of postcards
